At Bloom, learning is intentional, joyful, and thoughtfully designed.

At Bloom, we use a mastery-based, experiential approach that supports students’ academic growth while also nurturing their confidence, relationships, and sense of purpose. Children arrive with natural curiosity, and we create the time and space for that curiosity to deepen into understanding.

Through hands-on experiences, meaningful connection, and thoughtful pacing, students grow as learners and as individuals.

So what does a typical day at Bloom look like? Here’s how we spend our time together.

  • We all could use a softer start to our days and Play Into the Day is how we do that every day at Bloom. Each morning, students have 30 minutes of free play designed to help them start the day feeling regulated, connected, and ready to learn. Through movement and self-selected, creative, and social play, students wake up their brains and bodies in ways that support focus and emotional regulation. Instead of rushing to a desk, students may choose how they want to come into their day through a variety of activities, such as playing outside in our huge backyard, doing a quiet puzzle or art activity, or playing a game with a friend. Brain-based research shows that play helps children transition into deeper learning and at Bloom, we honor that by letting play lead the way. An added benefit of Play Into the Day is a built-in arrival window that helps ease the morning rush and creates a calmer, more relaxed start for children and families.

  • While it includes important announcements and an overview of the day, Morning Meeting is much more than that. It is a whole-group community building and instructional time that plays an important role in students' academic, social, and emotional development. Held at the start of each day, teachers focus on areas such as research and technology skills, executive functioning, communication, and collaboration.

These skills are intentionally reinforced across all parts of the day, including mastery based learning, experiential learning activities, and play.

Morning Meeting helps create a strong sense of community, supports student well-being, and ensures everyone begins the day focused, connected, and ready to learn.

  • Mastery-Based Education

At Bloom, students move forward once they truly understand a concept not just when they can get the right answer. We focus on helping children explain their thinking and build a deep understanding of foundational skills. Mastery-based education means each child is provided with a personalized learning path, in terms of both pacing and content, based on their unique, individual strengths and needs.

This flexible approach allows students to work independently or in small groups depending on their needs at any given time. Children may work at different levels across subjects—strengthening areas that are challenging while moving more quickly through material that comes easily to them.

We also intentionally consider each child’s social and emotional needs when designing their individualized learning path. While this level of personalization takes time and care, it allows us to remain responsive as children grow and change. The result is a learning environment that builds confidence and community, supports the whole child, and helps students feel known, capable, and connected.

  • Experiential Learning

At Bloom, experiential learning is learning by doing. Students are applying their learning by participating in meaningful, contextualized experiences. Experiential learning is engaging and motivating for students because it makes learning relevant to their lives.

During experiential blocks, students collaboratively participate in interdisciplinary units, with a focus on social studies and science content, driven by both their interests and the academic content they are learning. This approach gives students purpose and meaning by providing them with opportunities to connect knowledge to real-world experiences.

  • Creative & Life Skills gives students meaningful opportunities to explore creativity, develop practical skills, and engage with the world beyond the classroom.

Students explore art, music, drama, and movement through weekly immersive experiences taught in Spanish, building creativity, physical awareness, and language skills in authentic, engaging ways.

Each week students will have a Life Skills class which will focus on age-appropriate, hands-on learning that prepares students for everyday life. Topics will  include cooking, sewing, woodworking, basic financial literacy, and other practical skills that promote independence, problem-solving, and responsibility.

  • Fun Fridays are held each week during Creative and Life Skills time.

Students help select guest speakers to visit campus and participate in field experiences throughout the community, allowing them to connect learning to real people, places, and professions.

Together, these experiences broaden students’ perspectives and help them see themselves as capable, engaged members of the world around them.

At Bloom, we provide  a mastery-based, experiential approach to learning.

Young children naturally bring curiosity and a desire to learn, and our goal is to nurture that curiosity while helping it grow. By combining meaningful and engaging learning experiences with a strong, supportive community, we foster a lasting love of learning to help students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

What is Experiential Learning at Bloom?

In practice, experiential learning at Bloom means students apply academic skills and content in relevant, meaningful ways. For example, after learning about fractions, students might take part in a unit focused on planning and preparing a special meal for classmates and families. They would use their math skills to measure ingredients, adjust quantities, estimate costs, and make decisions together.

Experiences like this connect academic learning with collaboration, problem-solving, and real-world application. Experiential learning helps students understand why what they are learning matters and how it extends beyond the classroom.
